Stearic Acid

Stearic Acid Specification

Chemical formula: CH3 (CH2) 16COOH Or C18H36O2

Stearic acid as a waxy solid substance is a chain saturated fatty acid with 18 carbons, which is notable as the most common saturated fatty acid. Stearic acid is produced by adding acid to the animal fat with water at high pressure and temperature that this process will lead to the hydrolysis of triglycerides. Stearic acid can also be obtained via the hydrogenation of some unsaturated vegetable oils. Typically stearic acid is actually a mix of stearic acid and palmitic acid.

Uses of stearic acid

  • Stearic acid is used in sugar, syrups and candies as a hardener. It is most commonly used in therapy candies such as candies contain vitamin C which is effective in treating symptoms of common cold.
  • Stearic acid plus ethylene glycol and glycol stearate and glycol di stearate creates pearl impact in shampoo and soap.
  • Stearic acid along with castor oil are used to make fabric softener.
  • Stearic acid is also used as an insulator compound during the making casting plasters from a piece of plaster mold or from waste and mold residue or when a mold is made using an original polished clay. In this application, stearic acid powder is dissolved in water and the attained solution is rubbed on the surface which must be removed from the casting mold. Reaction of this compound with calcium in plaster leads to the formation of a thin layer of calcium stearate which acts as a releasing agent.
  • In fire-works or fire-related tasks, stearic acid is often used to be coated by metal powders such as aluminum and iron. This process by preventing oxidation, allows to the attained mixture to be stored for a longer time. The stearic acid is also used in fire extinguishers.
  • Stearic acid is applicable in the production of candles in order to strengthen Paraffin. In addition, increase the duration of the fuel.

In general, stearic acid is used in many product lines including medical (suppositories and ointments), cosmetics accessories, food additives, soaps, detergents, oil pastels, surfactants, coatings, motor oil, active accelerator, dispersing and softener agent in rubber compounds, textile auxiliary, candles making, shoes industry and metal polishing and so on.
